Global civil society alliance, CIVICUS, has released a revised version of what is probably the world’s most comprehensive compilation of commitments made by governments on civil society rights.
“The compendium is the result of years of painstaking research on public documents that promise respect for civil society freedoms and is an invaluable tool for citizens and organisations around the world. It is arguably the most comprehensive document of its kind in the world,” said Mandeep Tiwana, Head of Policy and Research at CIVICUS.
“The compendium provides a key reference point for advocacy actions to counter restrictions on civil society activities and its release comes at a critical time when a number of governments have reneged on their commitments to civil society by drafting and implementing restrictive legislation,” said Tiwana. “From Kiev to Cairo and from Abuja to Kuala Lumpur, civil society groups are facing an increasing onslaught.”
Originally released in 2008, and now fully updated, the compendium consolidates various international standards and commitments made by governments at the regional and global levels to protect civil society and ensure participation in public processes.
In addition to collating relevant portions of major UN documents, the compendium also includes commitments made by regional bodies such as the Arab League and select groupings like the Commonwealth. It supports CIVICUS’ efforts to constantly strive for new and innovative means to enhance the ability and reach of the civil society sector.
CIVICUS believes that this comprehensive and accessible document will aid in the practical realisation of core civil society freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly, which are protected by a vast body of international law and inter-governmental commitments.
