A Civil Society in Transition: CIVICUS Civil Society Index Report for Fiji

Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) was the CSI country partner for the CSI project in Fiji. The Civil Society has a structure that is moderately strong and there are some signs of strengthening as CSOs begin to forge alliances and joint activities over common areas of interests. In regard to the environment dimension, civil society is moderately autonomous, has fair processes of dialogue with the state, benefits from fair taxation laws and recognised civil liberties. Although there is a strong commitment to assist those in need, corruption remains one of the challenges in the values that civil society experiences.

This however, does not affect its impact which reflects effective participation of civil society in influencing public policies, in responding to social interests, in meeting social needs and in empowering citizens.
