DATASHIFT DIRECT SUPPORT

DataShift is providing direct support to civil society organisations so they can improve, scale or complete their projects by strengthening their capacities in producing citizen-generated data. Through the direct support process, we are also building a global community of peers and champions of citizen-generated data.

DATA FOR ACTION

STRENGTHENING LOCAL NARRATIVES FOR ACTION TOWARDS THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Introducing our two-week facilitated online course, “Data for Action: Strengthening local narratives for action towards the Sustainable Development Goals”. We are working with real people, on real issues, using real data to drive meaningful change.

The course is free during the pilot (July – November 2017). For more information about our two-week online facilitated courses, download our brochure and syllabus or contact Hannah Wheatley, hannah.wheatley@civicus.org . To apply, click here.

DIRECT SUPPORT PHASE II

DataShift has piloted different training methods on using citizen-generated data (CGD) for campaigning on local and national sustainable development priorities. And, where possible, specific efforts have been made to support the coordination of these campaigns with efforts to implement and monitor progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The approaches tested include tailored workshops, developing a CGD campaign training manual, an intense two-day campaign camp with experts, providing financial assistance for CGD campaign activities, and online support from a DataShift capacity building expert. All the approaches had their strengths and weaknesses, however, success in every case was mostly attributed to a positive relationship between the civil society organisations (CSOs), DataShift and the training materials. Learn more about our second phase of direct support.

CGD FOR ACTIVISTS ONLINE COURSE

Incorporating citizen-generated data (CGD) into any phase of a campaign is now a tried and tested way of strengthening its evidence-base and messaging. From the campaign research phase and refinement of objectives, to detailing the implementation plan and monitoring impact – the inclusion of accurate and reliable CGD can be a key tool for any organisation. DataShift is therefore launching a two-week facilitated online course: Data for Activists. We are working with real people, on real issues, using real data to drive meaningful change. OUR PARTNERS

As part of the DSII process, we are enabling civil society organisations to create and begin CGD campaigns for monitoring or implementing SDGs in their communities. See all our partners.

CAMPAIGN CAMP: ARGENTINA

Citizen-generated data projects usually need to be accompanied by strategic campaigns to ensure the data they produce is taken note of and used. However, creating an effective campaign requires multiple different people and skills. In late 2016, Wingu created a Campaign Camp which they called ‘Camp Camp’, involving two days of intense work between five civil society organisations and a host of leading civic tech and campaigning experts from Argentina. Each organisation was taken through multiple steps to create a new CGD-driven campaign, demonstrating that effective, low-cost campaigns can be co-designed in a short period. Together with DataShift, Wingu’s experiences here will be adapted and applied in other countries. Download the summary or full report on Wingu’s results and learnings from Camp Camp.

CITIZEN-GENERATED DATA IN ACTION

In this presentationRed Lac Trans, a participant at Camp Camp that works to promote and protect the right of the transgender community in Latin America, share information about the social media campaign they developed during the two day event. Their aim is to get 15,000 signatures in support of a new law on gender identity in all countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region, by raising awareness about the alarming challenges faced by transgender people on a daily basis.
