Programme Director, Civil Society
Aga Khan Foundation, Geneva

Cutting across the Foundation's other programmes in health, education and rural development - as well as the work of the other agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network - the Civil Society Programme seeks to leverage AKDN's diverse and extensive economic and social development activities to make a contribution to the wider civil societies in which they operate. The objectives of the Programme are to build the civil society sector in the countries in which AKDN works, and to build societies which are rooted in the ethical practices of each host country.

While acknowledging ongoing vigorous debates about civil society organisations, this programme will look practically and operationally to create opportunities for groups of citizens, existing or newly formed, to extend the reach of their skills and interests for the public good. It recognises that there is a major need to strengthen existing and create new systems of leadership, governance and management of private interests organised for the public benefit. These opportunities involve businesses, educational institutions, professional associations, as well as those organisations referred to as Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
