"Slums are a symbol of inequality in cities. They are also the day-to-day reality of 104 million people in Latin America. We firmly believe that strong action is needed in order to improve the lives of excluded populations living in slums. We need to include them in strategies to find concreate and fast solutions."

Mapping and obtaining data about slums is an essential step in order to tackle urban poverty. Through my organization, Techo, I am developing a slum mapping initiative in Paraguay. It is the largest project ever done in the urban poverty information realm, and it will be a substantial contribution to the drafting of social policy.

Based on a youth leadership approach, this project works towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals through data collection and analysis for increased accountability and meaningful participation of relevant stakeholders in the fight against urban poverty.

This project will map and obtain further data from slum in the 28 most densely populated cities in Paraguay. Another important aspect of this initiative is its capacity building component. We are working with the national and local governments as well as NGOs and Paraguayan society so that they increase their capacity to play their part in the management and good governance of slums. It is essential for them to be included in this project so as to contribute to the social development of Paraguay.
