WHERE ARE CITIZEN-GENERATED DATA PROJECTS HAPPENING AND HOW DO THEY RELATE TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)?

CITIZEN GENERATED DATA INITIATIVES AROUND THE WORLD

This map shows how the citizen generated data initiatives in DataShift's database are connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is one in a series of three network maps exploring DataShift's citizen generated data initiatives. Read more about this map below, or find out more about the series here.

HOW DO I USE IT?

This map represents all citizen generated data initiatives in DataShift's database as they are connected to UN Sustainable Development Goals and tagged with either a specific continent or working at the global level. By looking at the data visually, as opposed to in a database or table format, we can quickly assess themes, gaps or holes in the data, and other interesting information about the data set.

What are the orange circles? Each orange circle, also known as a node, represents a UN Sustainable Development Goal. What are the blue circles? Each blue circle is a citizen generated data initiative collected by the DataShift team. What are the green circles? Each green circle is a continent where initiatives take place, there's also a circle for global initiatives. What do the lines between them mean? The lines (also known as edges), show that the DataShift team has tagged an initiative with one of the Sustainable Development Goals and the continent where the initiative collects data.

Key

  • Blue nodes are citizen generated data initiatives
  • Orange nodes are UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Green nodes are Continents/Global
  • Size of node: Number of connected initiatives (bigger node, more connections)

QUESTIONS TO LOOK FOR

Are certain continents more likely to focus on a particular UN goal?

  • This map may at first appear rather confusing and cluttered. So first, start by looking just at the orange nodes – the SDGs. The positions of the goals in the center show how closely related they are to each continent (green nodes). For example, if a goal is closer to the lower right, it’s more well-represented in Africa. If it’s closer to the lower center, it tends to be represented by initiatives that work at the global level rather than within one specific continent.
Are some continents less active or not represented in this set of data?
  • With a quick glance and a trained eye, you can now easily see which continents have fewer initiatives related to them, which SDG goals are being focused on, and which are, on the other hand, underrepresented in this dataset.
Are some Sustainable Development Goals likely to be more related to one another?
  • Looking at just the green and orange nodes, you'll notice they're different sizes. These nodes are sized based on the number of their relationships – so smaller continent nodes have fewer associated initiatives. Remember though that this is limited to the data that DataShift has gathered, and doesn't represent all initiatives -- consider contributing to the data set by adding an initiative to the maps!
