Nicaragua: La Prensa wins World Press Freedom Prize braving severe retribution

We congratulate the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa for receiving the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano 2025 World Press Freedom Prize. CIVICUS and the Central American Association for Development and Democracy express our gratitude to La Prensa for this achievement, as we celebrate the World Press Freedom Day.

During their 100 years of disseminating information to Nicaraguan citizens, the newspaper has overcome numerous obstacles. The most recent being the repression of the Ortega-Murillo government, which has imprisoned and expelled its members from the country and confiscated their property. Despite this, La Prensa continues to exercise freedom of the press by reporting on events of public interest and exposing abuses of power.

We call on the international community to continue supporting journalists and communicators bravely exercising freedoms of expression and press in Nicaragua despite criminalization, threats, and attacks in retribution.
