CIVICUS 10-year journey case study
Our research shows that while civil society is the first responder to humanitarian emergencies, they struggle to find resources to support their communities. Formal non-governmental organizations and institutions are often prioritized for resourcing. Grassroots and frontline activists who needed them the most are left behind.
To tackle this issue, CIVICUS started its inclusivity journey joining the #ShiftThePower movement and initiating, "Innovation for Change" (I4C) to promote fairer ways of distributing resources and grants.
As part of this learning journey, CIVICUS invited youth activists from all around the world to have a frank conversation in Uruguay to discuss how to use funds to improve grassroots collaboration. CIVICUS opened up a space for everyone to talk freely and share their thoughts and experiences.
In this context, two activists asked why they had to provide their comments and advice for free. This was an uncomfortable but key moment for us. It highlighted the tensions around youth compensation, sustainability of organisations and volunteering work in the center of the debate. Due to this convesation and others, the Grassroots Solidarity Revolution campaign was co-created in 2021 thanks to flexible funding and meaningful connections between five grassroots activists and CIVICUS. Since then, it has been promoting trust-based relationships and the creation of unusual dialogue spaces among activists, donors and allies.
