CIVICUS, together with 234 Myanmar, regional, and international civil society organisations, issued an open letter urging the UN Human Rights Council to reject the Myanmar military junta’s sham election results and take decisive action to advance accountability.
As the Council considers its 2026 resolution on Myanmar, the letter calls for a robust, principled, and time-bound response to the escalating human rights and humanitarian crisis. It urges the Council to unequivocally reject the junta’s attempts to manufacture legitimacy through an illegitimate electoral process conducted under the military-drafted 2008 Constitution, and to refuse any recognition of the junta’s rule.
The signatories stress that meaningful Council action is essential to protect the rights and dignity of the people of Myanmar and to ensure accountability for ongoing and widespread human rights violations.
