The upcoming Summit for the Future, set for September 22-23, 2024, in New York City, marks a significant United Nations effort to tackle global challenges. A primary focus leading up to the Summit is the development of the Pact for the Future, an action-oriented document aimed at addressing diverse global issues. This initiative aligns with the UN's broader commitment to strengthen multilateralism and tackle complex global challenges in a sustainable and equitable manner.
As part of this process, civil society organisations, alongside other stakeholders, have been contributing to the development of the Pact for the Future. CIVICUS has submitted its written input for the Zero draft and now the Revision 1 Draft of the Pact for the Future. This input is part of our ongoing commitment, building upon our previous submission to the Summit of the Future co-facilitators in December 2023 as well as our submission on the Zero Draft of the Pact for the Future in February 2024.
In our input, we welcome the acknowledgment of the poor state of achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Revision 1 of the Pact for the Future and urge for the recognition of the lack of open civic space and attacks on civil society organisations and activists as major impediments to progress on the SDGs. We also call for the appointment of a UN Civil Society Envoy to facilitate robust participation of diverse civil society voices and to enhance the UN’s outreach to civil society globally. We believe the appointment of such an Envoy can help promote best practices on civil society engagement across the UN system. Further, we urge that the Pact for the Future move beyond state-centric approaches by including pathways for enhanced people’s participation in the UN’s work, such as a UN Citizen’s Initiative and a UN Parliamentary Assembly."
